Denman - Etched with a photograph of leaves and berries, taken in Vancouver's West End, this copper and sterling silver pendant will delight nature lovers as well as those who love Vancouver, whether a visitor or resident. Each etching in this line has been photographed in one of Vancouver's lovely parks, neighbourhoods or gardens and has a story of Vancouver's history to tell.

The West End of Vancouver is full of history. At the top of end of Denman Street, the land has seen a wide range of people. The Kanaka Ranch site, started in 1869, at the Coal Harbour entrance to Stanley Park was home to a group of Hawaiian settlers, who farmed and mined coal seams in the area. They also intermarried with the original inhabitants of the area, the Squamish people, and many native families in BC can trace some of their ancestry to those far away islands. Later it was also home to the only Vancouver hockey team to ever win the Stanley Cup. The original Vancouver Millionaires won the cup in 1915 in a best of five series versus the Ottawa Senators. They played at the Denman Arena, the largest hockey arena at the time as well as the first to use artificial ice in Canada, which subsequently burnt down in a fire in 1935. The area at the top of Denman St is now known as Devonian Harbour Park and is part of Stanley Park, just across from the Vancouver Rowing Club.

This pendant is made of sterling silver with a textured copper border. It's just over an inch in diameter, with a dark patina to bring out the details. The back has been etched with a design from Japanese Sashiko embroidery, to reflect the neighbourhood my studio is in, the former Japantown, in the heart of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

The pendant and bail are handmade. I use reclaimed copper and recycled silver and etch the patterns using low voltage electricity and a weak metal salt solution which is far less toxic than etching with acid. It has been sealed with a skin safe, non toxic coating to protect the patina and prevent tarnish. Clean with a soft cloth, mild soap and warm water only.

The pendant comes with an 18" sterling silver chain or a leather neck cord with sterling silver ends. You can choose which one you wish from the drop down box. It arrives in a reusable gift tin, featuring a photograph that one of the etchings is taken from.
